Two guys did a coast-to-coast ‘Cannonball Run’ in a Tesla Model S for a new record

Two guys did a coast-to-coast ‘Cannonball Run’ in a Tesla Model S for a new record On July 1st at 11:30 pm PT, two friends, Jordan Hart and Bradly D'Souza, left Redondo Beach, California, in a 2015 midnight silver Tesla Model S, and proceeded east. Fifty-one hours and 47 minutes later, they arrived at a garage on E. 31st Street in New York City, claiming to set a new record for the fastest transcontinental drive in an electric vehicle. They say they bested the previous record holder by a little more than four hours. They tweeted and posted photos to Instagram throughout the trip, both to document the experience and verify locations and the route along the way. Notarized witnesses signed official arrival and departure documents at both the start and end of the trip.

This great hobby of ours has many different layers and genres within it. Whether you like unique rat rods, modernized restomods, survivors wearing battle scars, plastic-infused late-models, or classic American iron, we can all agree on one thing—we love cars, and that's the glue that bonds us together. One of our dedicated readers, 24-year-old Alex Waltz from Florida, is one of our fellow car lovers, and he sent us his adventure with a new-to-him classic, so we decided to turn it into a feature.

Alex is guilty of what he refers to as "project-hoarder syndrome," with a backyard that is crammed full of basket-case projects that he lacks the time and money to finish. He's managed to cull his herd down to a 1972 Bug awaiting an LS motor and a 9-inch posi, a V8 CJ5 needing valves and a clutch, and a dismembered 383-powered 1980 Corvette that's been awaiting reassembly for over two years. Alex told us, "They're like lost puppies. I can never leave them where I find them. I bought every last one of them on the cheap, with dreams of returning them to former glory and driving them down Route 66, but for reasons I'm sure you can relate to, some of them never saw a license plate for the whole time I owned them. Too many problems, and not enough time or money."

That all changed earlier this year when he quit his job at a local hot rod shop, and decided it was now or never to take the trip down Route 66 that he had always wanted.Being 24 and still in school, he found himself in a place he had never been before: he had a summer to himself with money in the bank.Of course, it can never be that simple, and Alex realized much to his dismay that nothing sitting in or around his garage would be able to make such a trip.He needed something a little more solid and at least vaguely reliable, so he pawned off a 1966 Bug, a 1981 El Camino, and a treasure trove of car parts he had amassed over the years, to get the cash needed to acquire something a little more "reasonable."

He then took the plunge and became the proud new owner of an all-original Mallard Green Iridescent 1971 Ford Ranchero that he calls Lucy Green (named such because he found it in Port St Lucie, FL).Lucy is an unmolested two-barrel 302 car with a C4 automatic that likes to drip now and then. It has an a/c unit that unfortunately doesn't work due to some missing components, so Alex had to make do with no a/c, no radio, and no gas gauge—just unneeded luxuries, right?

None of that stopped Alex from driving his new classic on the greatest summer of his life. They did 16,000 miles across 26 states together, conquering the Old Dixie Highway, the Tail of the Dragon, Route 66, the entire Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) from Tijuana to Seattle Bay, the Black Rock Desert, the Bonneville Salt Flats, Pikes Peak, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The car chewed through three alternators, a voltage regulator, five front tires, a thermostat, some of the shift linkage, a fan relay, and a leaf-spring shackle mount. They broke down everywhere from the middle of the New Mexican desert (42 miles from the nearest town) to the parking lot of the In-N-Out burger on the Sunset Strip, but with a little ingenuity and a whole lot of determination he kept the old girl on the road.

After the trip money was a little tight, but never for a moment did Alex feel like it wasn't worth it. He doesn't get to eat out much anymore, he had to cut back on his school expenses, and he canceled a few expensive subscriptions. (But not HOT ROD!) Upon making his triumphant return—broke but satisfied—Alex was quite amused finding the latest issue of HOT ROD Magazine on a pile of mail, flipping straight to the Editor's Notes written by Evan Perkins about his newly acquired car, and reading all about how it's worth the financial sacrifices to get behind the wheel of a solid classic, especially if that classic is a pretty green Ranchero.
