DETROIT — A Michigan man is in trouble after police say he lived with his girlfriend's corpse for about a month.

David Hall, 49, of Monroe has been charged with concealing the death of an individual, a felony.

Police are investigating but don't suspect foul play in the death of Kandace Simmons.

"He opened the windows and lit some candles to mitigate the odor in the apartment," Monroe Police Lt. John Wall said.

Officers discovered Simmons' body Dec. 31 in a bedroom of an apartment in Monroe, about 35 miles south of Detroit, after the landlord asked police to perform a welfare check, Wall said. The landlord became concerned after Hall offered repeated excuses as to why Simmons wasn't available for discussions the landlord wanted to have about rent.

Colo. Woman Allegedly Murdered Her Father and Then Encased His Remains in Concrete

Colo. Woman Allegedly Murdered Her Father and Then Encased His Remains in Concrete A Colorado woman was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder after she allegedly killed her father and covered his remains in concrete in a crawl space in their home, PEOPLE confirms. Dayna Michele Jennings was arrested on Jan. 10 in the death late last year of her father, 69-year-old William Mussack, according to Sue Lindsay, spokeswoman for Colorado’s Adams County district attorney, Dave Young. Jennings, 44, is being held at the Adams County Jail. She has not yet entered a plea. It is unknown whether she has retained an attorney who could comment on her behalf. William’s brother contacted police in Federal Heights, Colorado, on Dec. 28 asking for a welfare check on his brother because he hadn’t heard from him since Dec. 5 and couldn’t reach him, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE. When questioned by police at her home in Federal Heights, where her father was believed to have lived, Jennings allegedly said Mussack didn’t live there and that he had lost his phone, the affidavit states. The next day, Mussack’s brother called police again, saying he still had not heard from him, prompting police to visit Jennings again. • Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? An officer who searched the home on Dec. 29 said he smelled something rotting and that the house smelled like sewage, according to the affidavit.

Investigators believe Simmons, who is in her 50s, died in the first week of December. Wall said neighbors noticed a window in the apartment was opened around then and remained open, something they thought was odd given the cold weather.

Officials are awaiting reports from the medical examiner's office about how Simmons died. She may have had medical problems, Wall said.

"There was nothing at the scene to suggest a homicide," he said.

Wall said Hall couldn't provide investigators "any good reasons for why he didn't call to report the death."

"At one point, he said he panicked," Wall said.

Hall was arrested on an outstanding warrant for a domestic violence incident involving Simmons, Wall said.

At his arraignment, he was given a $50,000 bond. He is due back in 1st District Court in Monroe Jan. 18.

Detroit man awarded $1 million for wrongful conviction .
A Detroit man who spent 25 years in prison for murder before proving he was the victim of police misconduct was awarded $1 million on Wednesday under a state program that compensates the wrongly convicted. Desmond Ricks was released from prison last May when new tests showed that bullets recovered from the body didn't match the gun that was presented as the weapon in the slaying. He and the Innocence Clinic at University of Michigan law school made a remarkable claim, accusing Detroit police of switching bullets. The Michigan attorney general's office agreed that Ricks qualified for compensation.
