Schaff's attorney said Stocks “acted selfishly by depriving the father of the ability to be present at an event that was extraordinarily important to him,” according to court documents.

Stocks on Friday turned herself in and began serving her week-long sentence.

“Her father and I both agreed on baptizing her,” she told WSOC. “I regret that he wasn’t part of it, but I don’t regret raising her in the Catholic faith, which is what we both wanted.”

Schaff’s attorney told the Charlotte Observer Stocks was being punished not for the baptism, but for defying the judge.

“For our system to work, there ought to be consequences for willfully and intentionally violating a court order,” attorney Jonathan Feit said. “I teach my children that. I reject the notion that anybody else is responsible for what is happening besides Ms. Stocks herself.”
