The mother told 11 News that she went with her instincts -- and against police wishes -- when she went off on her own to find the car.

"I'm just happy I went with my own instinct. I'm happy that she's safe. It was only 45 minutes to an hour after the incident," India said.

India said it was a terrifying ordeal that started around 12:30 p.m., when a man approached her.

"He looked at me, I looked at him and I thought he was going to ask me did I want help? That's it. That's what I thought (he) was going to say, and I look back and the car was screeching down the street. That was that," India said.

The man took off with India's car and her 1-year-old daughter inside. India called 911 and was only able to give a partial license plate number. Police told her to stay put, but she couldn't.

"Every minute counts that she's gone. I don't want to keep sitting here, even though they told me not to leave. I'm glad I went with my instinct, and I'll deal with whatever comes with me leaving later. I wasn't ready to sit there and keep waiting, and thank God I didn't," India said.

India and relatives checked alleyways and parking lots near the scene and eventually pulled into an apartment complex in the 4800 block of Hamilton Avenue, where she found her car with her daughter in the back, unharmed.

"I don't think he knew that she was in the back seat. I think that's the only reason why my car is parked now," India said. "Her eyes were closed, but her face was wet. I could tell she probably cried herself to sleep. She was still strapped in, so that's a good sign. Nothing was unzipped or anything like that."

Police at the scene said that the 4800 block of Hamilton Avenue is actually a popular place for stolen vehicles to be abandoned.
