Emmys: HBO Dethroned for the First Time in 18 Years by Netflix

Emmys: HBO Dethroned for the First Time in 18 Years by Netflix For the first time, Netflix has come out on top as the platform with the most Emmy nominations. The streaming giant has received 112 nominations for the 70th annual primetime Emmy Awards. That’s up more than 20 from 2017, when it scored 91 nominations. Netflix ends a 17-year winning streak by HBO, which previously topped the nominations. Netflix was aided by powerhouse projects such as “The Crown,” which received 13 nominations, including a key drama series nod; “Stranger Things,” which received 12 noms, including drama series; “Godless,” which received 12 noms, including one for limited series; and “GLOW,” which received 10 noms, including comedy series.

Ted Danson is the best actor on arguably TV's best pure comedy , and thus deserves yet another Emmy nomination for his stellar work. It’s been 36 years since Cheers premiered, yet Sam Malone is somehow still the best working television comedy actor we have .

Danson has donated more than ,000 to Democratic candidates, including Al Gore, John Edwards, Barbara Boxer, Bill Clinton, Al Franken, and John Kerry. Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy . Nominated . Primetime Emmy Awards.

Good news for Ted Danson: Not only did he receive a Best Comedy Actor nomination for “The Good Place,” but he is now the most nominated performer in the category. Thursday’s nomination marks Danson’s 12th bid in the category, which he has won twice, for “Cheers” in 1990 and 1993.

Danson, who was last Emmy-nominated for his guest turn on “Damages” in 2010, was in a long-standing tie at 11 Best Comedy Actor nominations with Alan Alda and Kelsey Grammer. Alda was the first to hit 11, getting shortlisted every year for playing Hawkeye on “M*A*S*H,” winning in 1974 and 1982. Danson then pulled off the “11 nominations for 11 years” feat for everyone’s favorite bartender Sam Malone.

‘Game of Thrones,’ Netflix Lead Emmy Nominees

‘Game of Thrones,’ Netflix Lead Emmy Nominees After a year off, “Game of Thrones” has returned to Primetime Emmy Award contention in a big way. The fantasy epic drew 22 nominations Thursday, the most for any series — edging out NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” and fellow HBO drama “Westworld,” which each attracted 21 nominations. Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” followed with 20 nominations. FX’s “The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” led all limited series with 18 nominations. “Atlanta,” also from FX, was the most nominated comedy series at 16.Netflix, however, supplanted longtime industry leader HBO as the most nominated network or platform.

The Emmy nominations were actually pretty solid this year, but as always there were a few snubs that need to be pointed out. Ted Danson got his nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy .

Holy mother forking shirt balls . This morning, the Emmy nominations were released, and the visionary NBC comedy The Good Place wasn’t mentioned. Not even once. Boo. It’s quite a shame, because the show has so much to offer. Kristen Bell! Ted Danson !

Though “Frasier” also ran for 11 seasons, Grammer was only nominated 10 times, missing in 2003. He got his first nomination in the category in 1992 for playing Dr. Frasier Crane in an episode of “Wings”; that was the weird year in which the TV academy allowed guest stars to compete in the regular acting races. Grammer has the best win record of these three though, taking home four trophies — a record he shares with Carroll O’Connor (“All in the Family”), Michael J. Fox (“Family Ties”) and Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”).

Danson’s nomination for his bow tie-loving, sinfully delightful architect Michael on “The Good Place” was hardly a sure thing. The beloved comedy got zero nominations last year and he was only in eighth place in our odds. But the show broke through with nominations for Danson and Maya Rudolph in Best Comedy Guest Actress for Eternal Judge Gen. Earlier this year, Danson won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Comedy Actor.
