George high on Rockets' wish list, but Lakers still favorites

George high on Rockets' wish list, but Lakers still favorites Houston plans to make runs at superstar free agents LeBron James and Paul George this offseason.Immediately after agreeing on a deal to bring Chris Paul to Houston last June, Morey was reportedly aggressive in the pursuit of George, then with the Indiana Pacers. Ultimately, George was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder to combine with Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony. Many had that trio pegged for Western Conference greatness, but the Thunder won 46 games and lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Utah Jazz. With the offseason approaching, the Rockets will once again be aggressive in free agency, targeting James or George, both sources said.

It’s common knowledge that Paul George is interested in returning home to join the Lakers , but he might not be heading there alone. George will at the very least have a discussion with LeBron James about joining forces in LA, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Now, with free agency less than a month away, the plan may be ready to come to fruition. In a recent NBA Draft special, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski suggested the All-Stars would do well to discuss their options as potential teammates this summer, particularly in the City of Angels.

"The most intriguing scenario remains him partnering with LeBron James on Los Angeles because Paul George alone doesn't make them a championship contender," Woj said, "but partnering with LeBron … there's a fairly easy pathway for the Lakers to get that salary cap space. That's going to be a conversation or conversations those guys are going to have once we get toward July."

George and LeBron James to Lakers reportedly 'intriguing scenario'

George and LeBron James to Lakers reportedly 'intriguing scenario' The Oklahoma City Thunder have done everything possible to sell Paul George on a future with the team after acquiring him from the Indiana Pacers last summer. Despite this, the NBA insider indicates that the “Lakers are home. He (George) grew up in L.A., and when he left Indiana his plan was that he would be in L.A. in a year.

With Kevin Durant expected to re-sign with the Golden State Warriors once free agency begins, James and George will be considered the two best talents available on the open market.

Last month, NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O' Neal predicted that both LeBron and PG-13 will be rocking purple and gold for the 2018-2019 season.

The Lakers could see up to $70 million in cap space this summer if they renounce their rights to Julius Randle, who will be a restricted free agent on July 1st, and waive-and-stretch the salary cap hit of Luol Deng, who is due nearly $37 million combined over the next two seasons.

Oklahoma City can offer George a five-year, $175.7 million max deal, far outpacing the most that rival teams can offer him (four years, $130.3 million). The Houston Rockets and Philadelphia 76ers-both likely championship contenders-are intriguing options as well. But the Lakers remain the favorite to land the five-time All-Star, due in part to his Southern California roots.

As for James, the Lakers are the only likely suitor with a clear path to enough cap space to sign him and whichever max free agent he recruits to join him.

The betting odds say George is more likely to play for head coach Luke Walton next year. According to sportsbookreview, the Lakers are minus-200 to sign George this summer, ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder (plus-400) and the Philadelphia 76ers (plus-600).

For James, the Rockets are plus-150 favorites, with the 76ers (plus-300), Cavaliers (plus-350), Lakers (plus-400), Golden State Warriors (plus-1600), Los Angeles Clippers (plus-1800) and Miami Heat (-lus-2500) listed as the next likeliest candidates.

It'll be great if L.A can land either one, but getting both would be thrice as nice for Lonzo Ball and company.
