Let me start by saying this: I hate President Donald Trump's tax bill. I think it will do massive damage to lots of good people, just to benefit a tiny few. I have been in politics for a pretty long time, and it is hard for me to remember any piece of legislation as disgraceful as this one.

I am guessing that there's no shortage of my fellow Democrats who feel the same way. And, as we are wont to do, when we hate something the opposition has done, we not infrequently see a path to victory in it. How can Trump be championing something that will hurt his supporters the most, we wonder. If we want to beat Trump and the Republicans, we conclude, this is what we need to be talking about every day for the next 300 days.

Democrats rip 'highly partisan' bill to fund children's insurance

Democrats rip 'highly partisan' bill to fund children's insurance Nearly 100 House Democrats are urging congressional leaders to pass a bipartisan extension of the program. In a letter sent Friday, 99 House Democrats urged leaders of the House and Senate to reject the House-passed CHIP extension and instead work on a bipartisan solution.

I understand the impulse, but I'm guessing it's the wrong one. Despite what the polls may say, if you look past the purely transactional, you can see how this bill actually strengthens Trump's hand. That's the through-the-looking-glass political world we live in today, and we Democrats better figure that out.

So first, let's be clear about what this bill was really about. It can be easy to forget now, but during the presidential campaign, there were various big dollar Republicans who spent big chunks of the election sitting things out. They had misgivings about Trump, and that froze some of the money Republicans typically rely on.

If you had worries about Trump during the campaign, nothing that's happened in his presidency can have done much to assuage them. Nor could the repeated failures of Republicans on Capitol Hill have encouraged much confidence. So, if your boss is unhappy with you for more than a year, what do you do? The human reaction is to go for the big score that wipes all the failures away. That's exactly what Republicans did, and their donors hit the jackpot.

Democrats helped crush the GOP’s Obamacare repeal push by maintaining total unity and generating broad public outrage. It’s a powerful formula that fractured Republicans — but one that will be harder to replicate against the GOP tax bill .

× The breakneck speed of the Republican tax bill is angering Democrats and increasing its chances. The fast-track effort and its relative success over the past few weeks have analysts starting to believe the GOP can get a tax bill to Trump 's desk.

Now, you might say: OK, big Republican donors love the bill. So what? We weren't ever going to win those people over. The reason to keep this tax plan in the news for as long as we can is that it will help us peel away the working class and blue collar voters who form Trump's base. The more they learn about how bad it is, the more will flee the GOP.

And that gets us to the second, and more important point: Yes, this bill will be bad for Trump voters, but no, that fact doesn't really matter, at least for electoral purposes. Why? Because Trump voters aren't going to measure the success of the Trump presidency by how well they fare economically. I know that's political heresy to say, but it's true.

To be sure, Trump's campaign and his presidency may never have been possible without the trauma of the Great Recession. That may have been an emotional predicate to his rise. But don't make the mistake of concluding that matters economic account for his enduring appeal, at least among his base.

GOP rejects Dem effort to demand Trump’s tax returns ahead of Senate vote

GOP rejects Dem effort to demand Trump’s tax returns ahead of Senate vote House Republicans on Wednesday rebuffed a Democratic attempt to demand President Trump release his tax returns to show how he would be affected by the GOP's tax overhaul. The effort from Democrats as part of a procedural vote failed along party lines ahead of an expected vote in the Senate this week to pass a tax reform plan.

Donald Trump ’s Massive Corporate Tax Cut Literally Cannot Pass Congress. Those reasons have to do with the Senate’s budget reconciliation process, which Republicans will have to rely on in order to move any tax bill into law, assuming Democrats won’ t sign on.

No, Trump's success has been built around making an energized minority of Americans feel like they are both special and being treated unfairly, and that there are other discrete groups who are responsible for the hardships and anxieties they may encounter. In other words, Trump says to an audience that is desperate to hear it: You are great, you have a right to be angry, there are specific and identifiable people to blame, and you are right to blame them. Those may be particularly noxious and combustible elements of an appeal, but their persuasiveness isn't pegged to economic metrics.

What's the lesson here? We have to stop thinking about how to beat Trump in conventional terms. If we want to peel away his supporters, we have to get out of our own heads and into theirs. If you support Trump, the only reason to turn away from him is if you think you would be better off were someone else in office. And in the case of Trump supporters, that means you have to believe there is someone else out there who will give you wider latitude to feel special, angry and entitled than he does. That person may exist, but Lord Almighty I don't want to meet him.

No. Attacking Trump and his plans aren't going to deliver victory to Democrats in 2018 or beyond. Our people are already pissed off by Trump, and his people aren't changing their minds. So if we want to win, we have to chart our own bold and decisively different course. One that captures the imagination on its own merits, and says we can do this better. Maybe that, authentically delivered, reaches the tiny sliver of undecided Americans who are looking for something new, and real, and good.

It won't be easy, but it's something we have to do. Because Trump's already got his base locked up tight. And with this bill, he's managed to lock up his donor class, too. The cost for that will be dearly paid, and by every one of us. Everyone that is, except him.

Trump: Dems trying to block GOP tax bill because it's 'too good' .
