‘Bigger Than Watergate!’ Trump Fumes as Russia Inquiry Enters Second Year

‘Bigger Than Watergate!’ Trump Fumes as Russia Inquiry Enters Second Year Mr. Trump tweeted that a confidential informant embedded in his presidential campaign would be a scandal bigger than Watergate, inviting comparisons.WASHINGTON — President Trump asserted on Thursday that federal investigators attempted to infiltrate his 2016 campaign with a confidential informant — a scandalous overreach, he said, that would be “bigger than Watergate!”

“Now we know, ladies and gentlemen, that Obama and James Comey’s FBI wiretapped the head of a political campaign ,” Limbaugh said. “This is bigger than Watergate . If Obama was spying on Manafort for political reasons, the ramifications could be extreme.

Trump even pronounced that the situation was “ bigger than Watergate ” in his Monday morning tweet. The tweet itself was an extension of Trump ’s own conspiracy that the FBI under Obama was out to get him. The President has vehemently denied that his campaign colluded with Russia

President Trump on Thursday touted a report saying the FBI under former President Obama spied on the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election, saying that the revelation could be "bigger than Watergate."

"Wow, word seems to be coming out that the Obama FBI "SPIED ON THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN WITH AN IMBEDDED INFORMANT," the president tweeted in reference to a National Review report published last week.

"There's probably no doubt that they had at least one confidential informant in the campaign." If so, this is bigger than Watergate!"

The report alleges that Obama-led agencies used their surveillance powers to monitor the Trump campaign.

This is not the first time that the Obama administration has been accused of spying on the Trump campaign.

Last year, Trump accused the former president of wiretapping Trump Tower shortly before the 2016 election.

"Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my "wires " tapped," the president tweeted in March 2017.

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer later walked back the president's claim, saying he did not mean that Obama literally wiretapped Trump Tower.

"The president used the word wiretap in quotes to mean broadly surveillance and other activities during that," Spicer said. "There is no question that the Obama administration, that there were actions about surveillance and other activities that occurred in the 2016 elections."

Comey: Trump's 'Spygate' claims are made up .
<p>Former FBI Director James Comey said late Thursday that claims by President Trump and his allies that the FBI improperly spied on his presidential campaign were made up.</p>"As best I can tell, it's made up. I don't know where he's getting that from, honestly," Comey told late night host Conan O'Brien during an interview on Thursday night.
