The coach for the Republican congressional baseball team asked President Trump to attend the annual game on Thursday, the anniversary of last year's shooting that wounded Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and several others.

"I asked him to come, I guess it was last week, I was over at the Oval Office. He said, 'I'll be there,'" Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas) told The Associated Press.

Last June, a gunman attacked GOP lawmakers as they practiced for the annual charity game. Scalise was badly wounded and underwent multiple surgeries as part of his recovery.

The House majority whip returned to Congress in September.

Williams told the AP that Scalise will start at second base during Thursday's game.

The congressman also noted that members of Trump's Cabinet will attend the game at Nationals Park.

Trump - who turns 72 on Thursday - has been vocally supportive of Scalise amid his recovery, including mentioning him during his State of the Union address earlier this year.

The White House has not commented on whether the president will attend the game.
