The enrollment period is shorterThis year's open enrollment period is only half as long as it was during the Obama administration, ending Dec. 15. In the past, people could sign up for plans into January.Because of the shorter window, experts and supporters of the law are urging people to sign up for coverage as soon as possible."Consumers need to know they should not wait until the last minute," said Jennifer Tolbert, director of state health reform at the Kaiser Family Foundation, during a press briefing Tuesday.

2 minutes ago Paul Ryan didn't sign off on NRCC truce with Steve (Graeme Jennings/Washington Examiner). The House’s chief tax writer is considering including repeal of Obamacare ’s individual mandate in legislation to overhaul the tax code after the House’s initial bill left it out.

A reconciliation bill must originate in the House, which is why the House took the lead on Obamacare repeal and is doing so again on tax reform. Even if the House does not include repealing the individual mandate in its legislation, it still could wind up in the final package.

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said on Sunday that repealing ObamaCare's individual mandate is being discussed in talks surrounding the Republican reform tax plan.

"We have an active conversation with our members and a whole host of ideas on things to add to this bill.  And that's one of the things that's being discussed," Ryan told Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday."

"We're listening to our members about what we can do to add to this bill to make it even better.  So that's among the ideas that a lot of members are suggesting that we could add to this bill to make it even better," he continued.

“We're going to pass a bill that can dismantle ObamaCare and reach the president's desk,” said House Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan Paul Ryan Trump sparks debate over war resolution “We’re going to repeal the five worst parts of the law: two mandates , two taxes and one board of bureaucrats.”

Ryan said doing away with the controversial individual mandate measure in the Affordable Care Act was still on the negotiation table among House Republicans. Conservatives plot how much to push Obamacare mandate repeal in tax bill .

Ryan's comments come after House Republicans unveiled their tax reform plan last week. The measure is expected to pass through the lower chamber but face a more difficult path in the Senate.

Key Republicans and President Trump have called for the repeal of the individual mandate to be included in the legislation.

Trump tweeted last Wednesday that he wanted to see a repeal in the plan.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-Texas) said last Friday that lawmakers were considering the move.

"No decisions have been made; we're listening to members and certainly the president as well," Brady said.

Brady had previously dismissed the idea as being too politically risky.

The Congressional Budget Office found that repealing the mandate would save $416 billion over 10 years, with the government paying out less in subsidies to fewer insured people.

By inserting Obamacare repeal into tax plan, Senate GOP may complicate passage .
Senate Republicans took a big gamble Tuesday with their tax reform bill, adding a partial Obamacare repeal provision that would free up more money for tax cuts, but also inject significant new political hurdles. The change, backed by President Donald Trump and a handful of senators, would end the mandate under the Affordable Care Act that all Americans have health coverage. Senate GOP leaders had previously rejected the idea as too risky to include in their tax package, particularly after the repeated failed efforts earlier this year to repeal and replace the 2010 law.
