The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver is not expect to play Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, according to ESPN. On Wednesday, the Cowboys reported that Bryant sustained a hairline fracture in the tibia of his right knee.

Various aspects of the defense need an immediate upgrade. Unfortunately, the Cowboys have very little cap space to make moves, which is why there was a belief circulating that Dallas would consider releasing wide receiver Dez Bryant from his contract to achieve flexibility.

Now, that doesn't appear to be in the cards.  Ian Rapoport of NFL Networkreports that the Cowboys are not expected to release Bryant, and will instead work on a contract extension to flatten his cap hit.

Should he decline to take a pay cut , the idea of cutting Bryant isn't all that crazy for Dallas. Said he was surprised no one knew. It has never appeared on Cowboys injury report and he hasn’t spoken about it until Wednesday.

Report : Sergio Romo re-signs with Tampa Bay. Red Sox, LoMo 'have been in touch recently'. Giants ink Derek Holland to minor league deal. Jones said he expects Bryant to return in 2018, though he didn't say if the Cowboys would ask him to take a pay cut .

As Rapoport states, Bryant does carry a $16.5 million cap number for the upcoming season. However, if an extension is reached, the Cowboys could spread out the impact over multiple seasons. Not only that, but Bryant will have all the more job security beyond 2018-- a win for both sides.

Bryant is coming off a season with 69 receptions, 838 yards, and six touchdowns, though he did have some trouble with dropped balls. Despite the down year, don't expect the Cowboys to take Dez out of Dallas anytime soon.

Bryant: No talk of pay cut, vows to prove doubters wrong .
There has been a lot of talk swirling around wide receiver Dez Bryant and his future with the Dallas Cowboys. Bryant chimed in on Friday to say that he hasn't discussed a pay cut with management. The three-time Pro Bowl selection also vowed to prove his doubters wrong after failing to record a 1,000-yard season or reel in more than eight touchdown receptions in a campaign since signing a five-year, $70 million deal in 2015.
