Spring ball is starting to come to a close, but there are still a whole bunch of things that can and will happen between now and the start of fall camp. Even so, here's how all the Power Five conferences look after Phase One of the offseason.

This might change come August, but for now, here's the early ranking of the Power Fivers, starting with …

5. Pac-12

It'll be a fun, competitive year in the conference, but there's just not a lot of pop. There aren't any wow teams, but that's coming in 2019.

Where's the superstar?

Thanks to five new coaching changes, it'll be a bit of a rebuilding year at some big places. That uncertainly alone is going to make it a tough season for a conference coming off a disastrous bowl run.

Report: Cowboys still hoping to trade for Thomas

Report: Cowboys still hoping to trade for Thomas Earl Thomas wants to play for the Dallas Cowboys. This is known. According to a report, there is mutual interest in a trade to facilitate that, with the Dez Bryant release being a potential catalyst. When Bryant was released, it freed up $8 million in cap space, which could be utilized to bring in Thomas, and sign him to the extension he desires. “…the Cowboys have contacted the Seahawks about a potential draft trade,” writes Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Star-Telegram. But the Seattle asking price of a first- and third-round draft pick was too high. The Cowboys are holding out hope that their asking price goes down to maybe a second-round pick. And the $8 million cap space they saved by cutting Bryant could be used to pay Thomas, whose base salary for 2018 is a convenient $8.5 million.” Hill also notes that the Cowboys might be hoping Thomas, a native Texan, would be interested in taking a hometown discount on a long-term deal. This scribe thinks that’s probably a bit far-fetched considering how much contract issues have meant to Thomas in the past. But it’s always a consideration, regardless. Thomas played for the Texas Longhorns in college and has made no bones about wanting to play for the Cowboys. This is something to keep an eye on going forward, especially because Seattle has already started blowing things up and needs more draft capital to make moves for the future.

Conference power rankings : Weakest of Power 5 a consideration, too. Based on average FPI rankings , the Big Ten is the weakest Power 5 conference ; it has an average FPI ranking of 49 (out of 128 FBS schools), six spots lower than the ACC.

Just so you know, JC, the SEC had the second best bowl record of all the power conferences . Your opinion is just that, your opinion , try to back it up with some facts and numbers and perhaps it may mean something.

Defending Pac-12 champ USC is going to be good again, but it'll likely rely on JT Daniels - a true freshman - to lead the way at quarterback, and he's not coming in until the fall.

Washington should be fantastic with a loaded defensive front, another great secondary, and QB Jake Browning returning. But compared to the lead dog in the other four Power Five conferences, the Huskies are just okay. They'll get their shot to make a statement early on, though, against Auburn in Atlanta.

The South will be fun, but is Arizona State really going to be better with so much work to do on both sides of the ball under Herm Edwards? Will UCLA have some semblance of a defense in Chip Kelly's first season, and will Arizona be able to take to Kevin Sumlin right away?

Not really, not really, and yeah, but Colorado is going to be in for a rough year, and Utah has to replace a whole bunch of parts on the defensive front.

The Utes will actually be a good sleeper squad, but the South as a whole is a massive question mark.

Cal should be better in the North, and Stanford gets back Bryce Love to another good Cardinal team, but Washington State isn't going to be better than it was last year, Oregon isn't going to be back up to its former snuff, and Oregon State is starting over.

Throw in that most of the games are still played after dark, and it's still the five in the Power Five.

4. Big 12

Like the Pac-12, there's a whole lot of good, but not a lot of amazing … other than Oklahoma.

Again … maybe.

Kyler Murray should be the main man under center now for OU, but you don't get better by losing Baker Mayfield. The Sooners will still be fantastic, but College Football Playoff good? It's a wee bit of a rebuilding year, but if Murray - or Austin Kendall - can rise up and rock as the new QB, this will still be the team to beat.

Report: Ravens out on Bryant after signing Snead

Report: Ravens out on Bryant after signing Snead The Baltimore Ravens have bolstered their receiving corps this offseason. The Baltimore Ravens have bolstered their receiving corps this offseason, but they are reportedly not planning to make a huge splash by signing Dez Bryant.

It’s time, therefore, to take stock and to provide some admittedly knee jerk rankings of the Power 5 hires. 7. Syracuse [Dino Babers] Syracuse has cold weather, a crappy dome, and a tougher conference slate than in years past.

The Power 5 Conferences battled it out for Conference Supremacy on the recruiting trail and it all culminated on National Signing Day. Here are the Power 5 Conference National Signing Day performance rankings . Next: Big 12 Conference .

Iowa State isn't going to do much more than it came up with last year, even if can do that much.

Texas Tech still has to show it can come up with a defensive stop, Baylor - while about to be a lot better - still has a long way to go, and anything positive out of Kansas will be an unexpected joy.

Oklahoma State should run the ball well, but it's going to take a step back without the Mason Rudolph to James Washington connection.

And that means it's up to the other sure-to-be-bowl teams to rise up and improve the conference as a whole.

It's only been one year, but Tom Herman, it's time to make Texas a thing again. The offensive experience is there, the depth is improving, and the talent is in place to at least make a run for the top two in the league.

Kansas State is loaded with all five starters up front to help out a strong group of skill guys; TCU has the talent to get back to the Big 12 Championship; and West Virginia should be outstanding with QB Will Grier leading an offense that'll light up the scoreboard like a Christmas tree.

3. ACC

For all of the chirping being done last offseason, and for all the suggestions that the ACC was the best conference in college football, the league's butt wasn't able to cash the check written by a whole lot of mouths.

Steelers GM: 'No update' on Le'Veon Bell contract situation

Steelers GM: 'No update' on Le'Veon Bell contract situation The ongoing contract stalemate between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Le’Veon Bell is still not going anywhere.Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert told reporters on Monday that he had “No update to report” on the status of negotiations. Much like he did last year at the same time, he pointed to the draft and said the team isn’t as focused on the contract situation.

Conference power rankings : Weakest of Power 5 a consideration, too. Conference Power Rankings : Which is the weakest Power 5 conference ? In the college football playoff format, the relative strength of each Power 5 conference is under more scrutiny than ever.

Conference power rankings : Weakest of Power 5 a consideration, too. 777dSharon Katz, ESPN Stats & Information. Conference power rankings : Weakest of Power 5 a consideration, too. Clemson's struggles with Louisville on Sept. 17 didn't help the ACC's profile.

However, Clemson might just be the best team in the country - or at least will be in the top three - with a defense that might just be unfair-good. The Tigers will be amazing, and Miami will be right back where it was last season, and …

There's a whole lot of uncertainty.

Can Florida State's offensive line be night-and-day better just because there's a new coaching staff? The Noles are good, but last year was the year to be national title great again, and it obviously didn't happen. They'll be better, but not good enough for the status of the program.

Virginia Tech is more than fine, and it'll probably be a win over Miami away from playing for the ACC title, but there are a whole lot of missing pieces to be a national player. The same goes for NC State, who'll come up with a strong year, but it's going to be a very good team - no more, no less.

Louisville, Wake Forest, and Georgia Tech will go bowling, and they can beat anyone in the conference in a one game shot, but they're not ACC championship challengers.

Clemson is just that good.

There's reason to be fired up about the ACC as a whole, though.

Pitt is way overdue to be good again, last season was an aberration for North Carolina, Syracuse will soon go bowling if it finds a defense, and Boston College, Duke and Virginia are coming off of bowl years.

It'll be a very, very good conference from top to bottom, but that team up top is going to be something special.

Trump judicial nominee refuses to say if landmark civil rights opinion was correctly decided

Trump judicial nominee refuses to say if landmark civil rights opinion was correctly decided Wendy Vitter, one of President Donald Trump's judicial nominees, refused on Wednesday to say whether a landmark civil rights opinion was correctly decided, triggering outrage and renewed criticism of the President's efforts to reshape the judiciary. At issue was Brown v. the Board of Education -- a seminal opinion that held that state laws requiring separate but equal schools violated the Constitution.

As a quick refresher, the Conference Power Rankings use a formula that equally weighs the rankings from The Associated Press poll and ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) to determine the best and worst conferences in the country.

2. SEC

Even though it was an all-SEC national championship, it was a horrendous year for a league that was inexcusably awful.

With all of the years upon years layered upon years of dominant recruiting classes, how could the conference be that bad?

And how, with five new head coaches, can it be that good in just one year?

Tennessee and Florida will be able to score touchdowns again, but are they ready to go from awful to amazing just because they have new head coaches? The Vols, no, but the Gators under Dan Mullen might be an issue.

Arkansas and Mississippi State are going to be a whole lot of fun on offense with Chad Morris and Joe Moorhead, respectively, taking over, and Jimbo Fisher is going to make an instant difference for a Texas A&M team that needed a new direction.

But none of the three will be deep in the SEC title chase, and neither will Missouri, Kentucky or Vanderbilt - although the Tigers and Wildcats will be in the mix for a bowl game again.

Of course, Ole Miss isn't going bowling because the NCAA thought it was naughty.

So that leaves South Carolina, LSU an Auburn to be in the hunt to keep this season from being the Georgia-Alabama SEC Championship Invitational.

All three are going to be good enough to make a whole lot of noise, and with those improved teams with new coaches, the SEC won't be anywhere near as lousy and underwhelming as it was last season.

And it helps to have the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs doing what they're about to do again. Those two - and throw Auburn in there, too - can carry the league's reputation, but …

1. Big Ten

It's not just that the top five teams in the league will all be good, it's that they're all going to be top 15 good - at least.

Ohio State is going to be every bit as strong as last year's Big Ten champ - but being every bit as strong might include an Iowa-like clunker along the way. Even so, it'll be a preseason top five team again with another serious D line, a killer group of running backs, and everything in place for another big year - including QB Dwayne Haskins.

Wisconsin is going to be even better, at least on offense, with almost everyone returning. The offensive line will be among the best in the nation, Jonathan Taylor will be a problem again, and now, there's a real receiving corps to worry about.

Penn State will be more than fine without Saquon Barkley. It's not like he was a 100-yard machine - his yards can be replaced, even if his spark and all-around game won't be.

Michigan State's defense will be a bear with nine starters back, and QB Brian Lewerke, RB LJ Scott, and the offense will be fantastic behind a line with four starters back.

Michigan needs the passing game to work, but the receivers are there, the running backs are in place, and it's going to be another great year from another great defense.

And those are just the league's big boys.

Minnesota and Purdue are through their adjustment periods and should be at least a win or two better. Maryland can't and won't have the same quarterback injury issues again, and Iowa is going to be Iowa - you know what you're getting.

Northwestern is a wild card with QB Clayton Thorson hurt, and Nebraska is even more of a curious team with Scott Frost taking over, but they'll both be part of the good midsection.

Indiana? It was a game away from going bowling, and now the O line is back and strong, and getting Arizona transfer Brandon Dawkins gives the quarterback situation a huge boost.

Rutgers will open up the offense a bit more, and the youth movement at Illinois should start to pay off - the team can't be any worse.

But start with those big five teams up top and keep tricking down, and the Big Ten should be the best conference in college football.

Now, if only all Comcast users across the nation could watch it.
