Right to carry guns in schools case headed to Michigan Supreme Court

Right to carry guns in schools case headed to Michigan Supreme Court The highest court in Michigan is set to hear arguments Wednesday on whether a person has the right to openly carry guns on school property -- a case getting considerable attention in the wake of the Florida school massacre nearly two months ago. At issue is a case that's been on the court's docket for more than a year, stemming from a 2015 incident involving a man with a concealed-carry permit who brought a gun to a school concert at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School. Some students, staff and spectators were scared by the incident, which caused the school board to ban all guns on school grounds, with exceptions for police.

Now McElwain has resurfaced at Michigan as wide receivers coach. “I didn’t get the chance to talk to him [to apologize],” Callaway said. ‘Coach Mac, I’m having a problem.’ He ’ll listen, give you advice and how to move forward.”

The story of how Jim McElwain became the wide receivers coach at Michigan isn't the most memorable one, primarily because he's not even sure how it happened.

"I don't know if (head coach Jim Harbaugh) got the wrong number and I answered," McElwain told reporters Monday, via Dan Murphy of ESPN. "No, I don't really know how it came about, but we got a phone call and I was obviously very excited to come and, if nothing else, get an opportunity to stand in the background and see how something is operated."

McElwain was hired to Harbaugh's staff in February following a two-plus-year stint as the head coach at Florida. He was fired by the Gators midway through the 2017 campaign, but produced two SEC titles in the two previous seasons.

McElwain's Florida team lost to Harbaugh's Michigan club to open the 2017 season.

Michigan wraps up spring football with Patterson in limbo .
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh will lead his team through one more spring practice, not knowing if quarterback Shea Patterson will be able to do more than practice in 2018. Two days later, most of the Wolverines are traveling to Paris to see some sights. When the former Mississippi quarterback goes under center for the Wolverines on Tuesday as they wrap up spring practice, his status with his new school will still be in limbo .
