Sebastian Vettel won Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, and he didn't even need to finish the race.

The Formula 1 race was found itself in an awkward situation when Canadian model Winnie Harlow waved the checkered flag before the race actually was supposed to end.

When the flag was waved early, a frustrated Vettel was worried that people would run onto the track with racers still driving at full speed. He said via eveningexpress.co.uk:

The Chinese Grand Prix came to an unexpectedly abrupt end when an official waved the chequered flag one lap too early .

"I told my team on the last lap so people would not jump on the track to celebrate. Some of the marshals were already celebrating. They peaked a bit early."

Harlow would post on Instagram that race officials mistakenly told her to wave the checkered flag before the race had ended.

Ferrari returned to the top of the podium at the track named for Gilles Villeneuve for the first time since 2004, with Sebastian Vettel going from the pole to the checkered flag to finish six seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas' Mercedes on Sunday. Erstwhile points leader Lewis Hamilton, who was aiming for a record-tying seventh victory in Montreal, struggled to finish fifth and fell one point behind Vettel in the standings.
