Giants select CB Sam Beal in Round 3 of 2018 Supplemental Draft

Giants select CB Sam Beal in Round 3 of 2018 Supplemental Draft The New York Giants have selected Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal in the third-round of the 2018 Supplemental Draft. The New York Giants have historically shied away from selecting players in the NFL Supplemental Draft, only twice before making a move.

In the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft , the Washington Redskins selected cornerback Greg Stroman with the 241st pick and wide receiver Trey Quinn with the 256th pick, the final selection in the entire draft .

Former Virginia Tech cornerback Adonis Alexander told me on Friday that he is applying for the 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft after being ruled academically ineligible for his senior Any team selecting a player in the supplemental draft forfeits its corresponding selection in the next year's NFL draft .

A pair of NFC East teams tried to corner the market Wednesday by participating in the NFL's annual supplemental draft.

Western Michigan cornerback Sam Beal, widely considered the best prospect available in a small group of eligible players, was selected by the New York Giants in Round 3. The Washington Redskins later grabbed Virginia Tech corner Adonis Alexander in the sixth round.

An athletic 6-1, 177-pounder, Beal should immediately compete for snaps in nickel packages for New York alongside Janoris Jenkins and Eli Apple. Beal's 4.5 speed and man-to-man skills should be a nice asset against pass-heavy divisional opponents like the Eagles and Redskins. He intercepted two passes in 2017, one of them against USC star Sam Darnold. Beal played three seasons at Western Michigan, finishing his career with 96 tackles and 21 pass break-ups.

The 2018 NFL Draft was the 83rd annual meeting of National Football League ( NFL ) franchises to select newly eligible players for the 2018 NFL season.

“We’re very, very excited about getting Sam in the draft,” Giants GM Dave Gettleman said in a statement. “He’s long, he’s very athletic for a corner, he has all the physical skills, he can carry the vertical, he has very good play speed, he shows instincts out there, he has ball awareness, he doesn’t panic when the ball is thrown at his guy, and he is a very willing tackler. We just feel it gives us a really talented young kid with the ability to ascend.”

Alexander is a massive (6-3, 207) corner who could match up nicely against receivers like Philadelphia's Alshon Jeffery or Giants tight Evan Engram. Alexander had seven INTs in three seasons for the Hokies, but struggled with academics, was caught using marijuana in 2016 and suspended two games in 2017 for violating team rules. Still, his arrival could help offset the loss of former Tech teammate Kendall Fuller, whom the Redskins traded to Kansas City in the deal to acquire quarterback Alex Smith.

What is the NFL Supplemental Draft ? Good question. But it happened this year? Yes, both the Giants and Redskins selected players. New York took Western Michigan CB Sam Beal with a third-round pick.

By taking Beal and Alexander, the Giants and Redskins will forfeit third- and sixth-round selections in the 2019 NFL draft, respectively.

“We feel like we’re getting our third-round pick now,” Gettleman said. “We basically had a draft meeting in the office, with people on the speaker phone who had seen him. It was a very thorough conversation.”

Other players eligible in Wednesday's draft were Mississippi State safety Brandon Bryant, Grand Valley State running back Martayveus Carter and Oregon State linebacker Bright Ugwoegbu, but none were picked.

The supplemental draft serves players whose circumstances have changed — academic ineligibility would be one example — subsequent to the primary draft held every April. Cris Carter, Bernie Kosar, Brian Bosworth, Rob Moore and Josh Gordon are among the prominent players who have entered the league via the supplemental draft over the years.
