On NBA Draft night, Luka Dončić unsurprisingly made some waves. The Atlanta Hawks took him with the No. 3 overall pick only to trade him to the Dallas Mavericks (and Trae Young) at No. 5. According to Joe Vardon of, the Cavaliers could’ve had Dončić for themselves.

“A source said the Cavs were offered on draft night the chance to trade up to No. 3 with the Hawks in a deal that would’ve sent Kent Bazemore to Cleveland.”

As it turns out, the Cavaliers were just very high on Collin Sexton. That’s whom they took eighth overall. If this report is true and they didn’t want Dončić, it’s almost unbelievable, but again, they were said to be very high on their eventual pick. Sexton is off to a great start in the summer league.

We can say, however, that Dončić is arguably the best player in this draft class. For some reason, the Phoenix Suns took a traditional center that has no role in today’s game. For some reason, the Sacramento Kings continue to be very stupid. But the Cavaliers passing on Dončić and losing LeBron James in the same summer? This has the potential to blow up in their faces in a major way.

As they look to rebuild in the wake of LeBron leaving again, that’s the last thing they need.
