Gordon Arthur " Red , The Red Baron" Berenson (born December 8, 1939) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre and head coach of the Michigan Wolverines men's ice hockey team from 1984 to 2017. Berenson was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.

Red Berenson will be joining Hago Harrington, Paul Stewart, Natalie Darwitz and David Poile in being inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame this December. Berenson has been the coach of the Michigan Wolverines hockey team for 33 seasons, leading them to two national championships and 22 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The coach was selected MVP both his junior and senior terms, and holds a bachelors and masters degree from the university - the latter earned in 1966 when he was an active NHLer with the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers.

NHL Insider. US Hockey Hall of Fame . Legendary college coach Red Berenson , three-time U . S . Olympian Natalie Darwitz and former NHL player Leland "Hago" Harrington will also be honored at the Hall 's 46th induction dinner and ceremony, to be held in Nashville.

Berenson played from 1961-1978 in the NHL, spending time with the Habs, Rangers, Blues, and Red Wings. Berenson was acquired with Barclay Plager in 1968, and played four dominant seasons with the Blues before being traded to the Wings for Gary Unger. He found his way back to St. Louis in 1974, and after his retirement in 1978 took over assistant coaching duties for the Blues. He won the Jack Adams trophy in 1981, and spent two years coaching the Sabres before beginning his long and successful tenure with the Wolverines in 1984.

Red was inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in 2013 and Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. In 987 NHL games, Berenson scored261 goals and 397 assists for an impressive658 points. He’s the first NHLer to score a double hat trick in a road game, with four of them coming in nine minutes.
