Report: Celtics might not take Markelle Fultz at No. 1

Report: Celtics might not take Markelle Fultz at No. 1 It’s been assumed by many for a while now that Washington point guard Markelle Fultz will be the No. 1 pick of the 2017 NBA Draft . But maybe that’s a bit hasty, according to a report by Chad Ford of ESPN, who notes the Boston Celtics have a handful of players they’re considering. Per Ford, Fultz is very much still in the mix. However, the Celtics are also considering Lonzo Ball, Josh Jackson, De’Aaron Fox and Jayson Tatum. This is an interesting report for a couple reasons.

In case you didn’t know, the Boston Celtics are interested in trading for a game-changing type of player. Pretty much the entire NBA has been aware of this since the Celtics started stock-piling assets in an effort to set themselves up to land a great player.

According to ESPN, the Celtics approached the Knicks about trading for Carmelo Anthony . But they were told he wanted to stay in New York. This is the first time, however, that C's were reported to actually have interest in Anthony .

The Boston Celtics definitely have the interest and the means to make a big splash this offseason.

According to Chris Mannix of the Vertical, the Celtics have eyed New Orleans Pelicans center Anthony Davis as a potential trade target.

The Pelicans, however, have no intention of trading their star big man. Davis is on a team-friendly contract through 2021, and the organization is committed to making the Davis-DeMarcus Cousins pairing work next season.

Davis would have certainly fit the mold of the type of player the Celtics reportedly want to acquire. That will obviously be much easier said than done, and while you can appreciate the Celtics aiming high, they’re going to have to look at other, more reasonable options.

Report: Celtics believe they can sign George to extension .
The Boston Celtics were reportedly in serious discussions with the Indiana Pacers about a Paul George trade on Thursday, and those talks are not necessarily dead just because the 2017 NBA Draft has come and gone. The Celtics are still loaded with future first-round picks, and the Pacers may be looking at a total rebuild. It seems unlikely that Boston would give up much in a trade if George is just going to leave as a free agent next summer, but one sports anchor in Boston says he has heard the Celtics believe they can sign George to a three-year extension as long as they also add Gordon Hayward this offseason.
