Report: Celtics might not take Markelle Fultz at No. 1

Report: Celtics might not take Markelle Fultz at No. 1 It’s been assumed by many for a while now that Washington point guard Markelle Fultz will be the No. 1 pick of the 2017 NBA Draft . But maybe that’s a bit hasty, according to a report by Chad Ford of ESPN, who notes the Boston Celtics have a handful of players they’re considering. Per Ford, Fultz is very much still in the mix. However, the Celtics are also considering Lonzo Ball, Josh Jackson, De’Aaron Fox and Jayson Tatum. This is an interesting report for a couple reasons.

The conversation includes Fultz tossing around the idea of signing with 3B, with Williams playfully chiding him . Unfortunately, a Fultz branded Big Baller Brand shoe was not meant to be.

Markelle Fultz on Considering Deal with LaVar’s Big Baller Brand & Why He Declined. Fultz says he couldn’t go through with it because the Ball family is far and away different from how he was raised. “I was raised to be respectful, cordial, not loud,” said Ebony.

Markelle Fultz arrives in Philadelphia wearing Sixers hat

Markelle Fultz arrives in Philadelphia wearing Sixers hat Markelle Fultz sure knows how to make a good impression. The presumptive No. 1 overall pick arrived for his workout in Philadelphia on Saturday wearing a Sixers hat, per Keith Pompey of the Philly Inquirer..@MarkelleF was rockin' a black #Sixers cap as he walked into the players entrance.— Keith Pompey (@PompeyOnSixers) June 17, 2017Here's @MarkelleF walking into the building with his #Sixers cap. But he reportedly considered Big Baller Brand . Lonzo and LaVar Ball’s Big Baller Brand . That’s according to this report from The Washington Post, which says Fultz did indeed consider that option, if only briefly

Being the consensus top pick heading into this year’s draft, it was expected that Markelle Fultz will be pursued by some of the biggest shoe and apparel manufacturers to endorse their brand . When he eventually signed with Nike, it did not come as a surprise to many

Markelle Fultz is almost certainly going to be the first overall pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft, with the Sixers having traded up with Boston for the pick in a blockbuster deal over the weekend. As with most surefire top picks, Fultz has already inked a deal with an athleticwear company; last week, he signed a multiyear deal with Nike:

As with all these prospects, Fultz had multiple companies courting him, but it might come as a surprise to learn which other company Fultz was considering, if only briefly:

Lonzo and LaVar Ball’s Big Baller Brand.

That’s according to this report from The Washington Post, which says Fultz did indeed consider that option, if only briefly:

Celtics soured on Fultz due to lack of explosiveness in workout?

Celtics soured on Fultz due to lack of explosiveness in workout? The Boston Celtics seemed to do a quick 180 on top prospect Markelle Fultz, and now we may have a bit of an idea why. According to what ESPN’s Michael Eaves tweeted on Sunday, some members of the Celtics organization were not impressed by Fultz’s workout and pointed to a perceived lack of explosiveness on the part of the former Washington star.Received some surprising info on Markelle Fultz and the #Celtics today. Some within the organization were not impressed with his workout.— Michael Eaves (@michaeleaves) June 18, 2017The most glaring critique was that he was not as explosive as they expected/hoped.

Markelle Fultz Says He Thought About Signing With ' Big Baller . Markelle Fultz considered signing with Big Baller Brand before .

These two are going to be rivals for a long time, so there’s no way Markelle Fultz actually considered this, right? But before doing so, he apparently entertained the idea of signing with Big Baller Brand , of all companies.

In an exchange relayed by The Post’s Babb, the young prospect discussed the idea with his trainer, Keith Williams:

Williams: You sure you don’t want to sign with them?

Fultz: I was thinking about it, but then I would make him money, though.

Williams: Or lose them more money.

[Babb asks if there was serious consideration for Team Fultz to join Big Baller Brand]

Fultz: I don’t know, honestly.

Williams: I don’t think they’ve got money to sign nobody.

Can you imagine if this had happened? The two players have been semi-rivals, although they haven’t exactly been head-to-head, aside from one regular season Pac-12 game last year where they finished with similar stats. Ball has only worked out for the Lakers, while Fultz has made a few different visits throughout the pre-draft process, but he’s going to the Sixers now anyway.

Of course, the idea of Big Baller Brand, at this stage (or, let’s be honest, any stage in the future) having the money to compete for non-family members just sounds absurd. They could always potentially offer equity, but it’s difficult to compete with a company like Nike. Why would a prospect hitch their respective marketing wagon to an unproven brand run by a guy who talks and acts like LaVar Ball?

Fultz jokes about signing with Big Baller Brand, mocks company

Fultz jokes about signing with Big Baller Brand, mocks company "I was thinking about it."While Ball had the more successful season in collge, Fultz has done his part to fuel a rivalry that will carry into the NBA. Last week, Fultz signed a shoe contract with Nike, but he had joked that he considered signing with LaVar Ball's Big Baller Brand. The brand released a $495 pair of ZO2 sneakers, which weren't even ready in time for Lonzo's Lakers workout.

Report says Fultz considered signing with BBB. "I was thinking about it, but then I would make him money, though," regarding the Big Baller Brand . His trainer replied, "I don't think they've got money to sign nobody."

Still, it’s amusing to consider the potential, as it was amusing to see Fultz ponder then reject the idea out of a desire to not want to make an opponent money.
