Whale dies in Thailand after swallowing 80 plastic bags

Whale dies in Thailand after swallowing 80 plastic bags A whale has died in southern Thailand after swallowing more than 80 plastic bags, officials said, ending an attempted rescue that failed to nurse the mammal back to health. Thailand is one of the world's largest consumers of plastic bags, which kill hundreds of marine creatures living near the country's popular beaches each year. The small male pilot whale became the latest victim after it was found barely alive in a canal near the border with Malaysia, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources said on their Facebook page Saturday.

Sea World claims to be all about celebrating, protecting and loving marine life. Well, I think it's time they put more action behind that sentiment by banning plastic straws from their theme parks .

SeaWorld San Diego's been under the plastic bag ban since last year, but today's move will extend that policy to all of the chain's theme parks , including SeaWorld Orlando, the Busch Gardens parks and Sesame Place.

ORLANDO, Fla. - To protect the environment, SeaWorld Entertainment has removed all single-use straws and plastic bags from the company's 12 theme parks, including those in Orlando.

The Orlando-headquartered company made the announcement Friday in a news release.

"We see the harmful effects of plastic pollution in the animals we rescue and rehabilitate, and therefore, recognize the importance of doing our part to curb plastic pollution," interim CEO John T. Reilly said in a statement.

The Ocean Conservancy, a nonprofit environmental advocacy group, estimates that 8 million metric tons of plastics end up in the ocean every year, SeaWorld said in the release.

"The process has been ongoing for a few years," SeaWorld spokesman Travis Claytor said about reducing plastic waste. "This has been something we've been working toward."
