House lawmakers say the Congressional Baseball Game will still happen on Thursday despite Wednesday morning's shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and several others at a GOP practice session in Alexandria, Va.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) reportedly drew tremendous applause from members when he announced the game would go on.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (Calif.), who is on the Democrats' roster, tweeted that the game will continue as scheduled on Thursday evening.

The shooting took place at a practice for the GOP congressional baseball team. Members of Congress were practicing for a game that was scheduled for Thursday night at Nationals Park. It was not immediately clear whether it would go on as scheduled.

Congressional baseball game shooting called 'deliberate attack'. Shooter identified as James Hodgkinson. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and multiple congressional aides were shot by a gunman during a Republican baseball practice.

"The #congressionalbaseballgame is on," Swallwell tweeted. "We will play for charity, but also for the victims & the heroic officers who took down the shooter."

Scalise, two Capitol Police officers and a congressional staffer were among five shot Wednesday morning. Scalise is expected to make a full recovey, while the alleged shooter has died from his injuries.

The Congressional Baseball Game has been played since 1909 and is a cherished event for Capitol Hill. Republicans and Democrats from both chambers face off once a year, with all proceeds going to charity.

Tickets to Thursday’s 56th annual Congressional Baseball Game were selling at a rate of 500 per hour, the morning after a gunman opened fire at the Republican team’s practice session. More than 18,000 tickets had been sold just before noon Thursday, the game’s organizers said. They are on track to raise more than $1 million. Last year, the game raised $500,000 for its charities. Before Wednesday’s shooting, the game was on track to raise $650,000, according to Congressional Sports for Charity.
