NBC executive defends Megyn Kelly interview with Alex Jones

NBC executive defends Megyn Kelly interview with Alex Jones Liz Cole, the executive producer of Megyn Kelly's Sunday night NBC News show, said people should wait to judge Kelly's interview with Alex Jones until it airs this weekend. Kelly is facing backlash for the upcoming interview with InfoWars host Alex Jones, a noted conspiracy theorist who believes the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax and says 9/11 was an inside job."He's a controversial figure for sure, but as journalists it's our job to interview newsmakers and people of influence no matter how abhorrent their views may be," Cole told CNN's Dylan Byers in a Monday night exclusive.

NBC News is moving ahead with plans to air Megyn Kelly 's interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones this weekend despite a backlash that has cost the show advertisers and led to Kelly being dropped as host for an event by an organization founded by parents of children killed at the Sandy

June 13 (Reuters) - NBC 's Megyn Kelly on Tuesday defended her interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones , saying it was important to show why a person who calls the Sandy Hook school massacre a hoax is respected by many Americans, including President Donald Trump.

"Because those wounds are understandably still so raw, we have decided not to air this week's episode of Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly."

Kelly and NBC have faced criticism for the interview since Kelly aired a preview of it last week. The former Fox News host was removed from hosting a gala for the Sandy Hook Promise Foundation following backlash over the interview.

Jones, a controversial host on InfoWars.com and a founder of the site, had claimed that the 2012 shooting that left 20 children and six adults in Sandy Hook dead was a hoax.

The executive producer of Kelly's Sunday night show, Liz Cole, defended the decision to air the interview earlier this week, saying Jones is "worthy of examination."

"He's a controversial figure for sure, but as journalists it's our job to interview newsmakers and people of influence no matter how abhorrent their views may be," Cole told CNN.

"He is someone who is worthy of examination, by sitting down with him, there's value in that."

Alex Jones releases more secretly taped Megyn Kelly audio; NBC responds .
Alex Jones released more pre-interview audio of Megyn Kelly late Thursday night and early Friday that includes the NBC News host saying Jones "became very fascinating" to her while separately assuring him the interview won't be "some kind of gotcha piece.""The reason you are interesting to me is because I followed your custody case, and I think you had a very good point about how the media was covering it and for some reason treated you and your family and what was going on as fair game when they never would have done that if you were a mainstream media figure," said Kelly, a former Fox News host, to Jones.
